While we’re neither a government agency nor a bunch of scientists or economists, we have gone one better than simply hazarding a guess.

We’ve calculated every figure with as much information as we could lay our hands on, including:

• Average cost to supply and take away a litre of water = 0.20p [Source: Ofwat]
• Average household occupancy in the UK 2.65 [Source: UK Government National Statistics]
